Autophagy

Pacman
Autophagy   What’s autophagy?   You can think of it like little ‘pacmans’ that cruise around your body and clean up all the rubbish!!   Autophagy is a vital process that removes and recycles unwanted or damaged molecules from your cells. It is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. The human body is so cool!!   Better still, it’s best known as the body’s way of turning the clock back and creating younger cells. (According to Priya Khorana, PhD from Columbia University).   Intermittent fasting is one of the best ways to trigger autophagy. So, if you can make sure that you are not eating for at least 12 hours over night, that is great.   Autophagy will continue to gain attention as researchers conduct more studies on the impact it has on our health, including it’s effect on potentially cancerous cells.   For now, nutritional and health experts such as Khorana point to the fact that there’s still much we need to learn about autophagy and how to best encourage it.   But if you’re interested in trying to stimulate autophagy in your body, she recommends starting by adding fasting and regular exercise into your routine.
